My name is Karolyn (Kaz) Wellings and this is my blog about a year living on the Hebridean island of Islay…

I’m a freelance graphic designer, creative artworker and photographer. I’ve been self-employed for the last 15 years; I worked for advertising agencies and newspapers in similar roles for the 15 years before that.

In December 2017 I was fortunate enough to be offered a contract as a graphic designer with Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay – a fantastic opportunity both to work for a dynamic, progressive distillery with superb contemporary graphic design, and to live in the Hebrides for 12 months and find out what life on a small island is really like.

I intend to take full advantage of my situation, exploring Islay and the surrounding islands, indulging my penchant for photography and developing my videography skills. Hopefully I will also be writing posts which will entertain anyone with an interest in the area, and posting tips and information which will be useful for planning a visit.

Year two and I’m still here… this could be a blog about two years living on Islay  :0)

You may well be wondering about the name of this site, Greene Island. Well this blog is dedicated to my good friend Daniel Greene (‘Army Dan’), who unfortunately passed away on 17th December 2017, the day I submitted my application for the position at Bruichladdich.

If I was superstitious, I would say that Dan arranged this opportunity for me, as after the shock of his sudden passing I was more than ready to leave my home in Edinburgh for a while, experience a very welcome change of scenery and clear my mind. However, I’m not superstitious, so I won’t say that!

What I will say is that Dan was a very special and inspirational man, who will live on in the hearts and memories of all the many people who knew and loved him.
